Jaguar to Celebrate its 80th Year Anniversary By Launching a new SUV
British multinational car manufacturer Jaguar confirmed Sunday that it will make a sport utility vehicle despite already having an SUV company, Land Rover.
Although, the Jaguar Land Rover was acquired by an Indian carmaker Tata Motors in 2008. Since then It sold a total of 374,636 vehicles at the end of March 2013, of which 316,043 were Land Rovers and 58,593 were Jaguars.
The new SUV vehicle will be called the F-PACE and it goes on sale in 2016. The F-Pace SUV will be based on the Jaguar XE, which is the newest and smallest car in the lineup.
The five-seat SUV is expected to reflect the appearance of a previous concept crossover, the C-X17. While the announcement of the new SUV is being made in conjunction with the North American International Auto Show starting here Monday, a new concept isn't expected to be shown.
Joe Eberhardt, CEO of Jaguar/Land Rover in the U.S., says there's space in the market for a luxury SUV with the styling chops of a Jaguar that isn't meant for the hardcore off-road driver. Hence, the Jaguar F-Pace won't steal sales from a Land Rover.
They are "two defined and delineated brands," Eberhardt says. "Land Rover is all about capabity - the ultimate off-road vehicle. We also think there is a market for people who maybe who do not need this ultimate capability."
The F-Pace is already been designed in England, and testing of it has begun. "We received such an overwhelmingly positive response to the C-X17 concept car last year that we just had to make it a reality," says Jaguar's director of design, Ian Callum, in a statement.
He added: ‘The F-PACE is our family sports car. It will encapsulate everything that Jaguar stands for – beautiful design, precise handling, a supple ride, luxurious interior finishes and cutting-edge technology.’
Speaking in Detroit, Jaguar Land Rover global sales director Andy Goss said: ‘In 2015 we will celebrate Jaguar’s 80th year. We have started it by announcing our first performance crossover which we consider to be the ultimate practical sports car. It builds on the marque’s founding ideals of Grace, Pace and Space. It will be one of the most innovative Jaguars we have ever developed.’
Jaguar Land Rover chief executive Dr Ralf Speth said: ‘Today’s announcements once again demonstrate our commitment to the UK and the advancement of a high-tech, high skilled, manufacturing-led economy.' ‘We want to offer customers greater choice, with even more exciting vehicles, crafted with that special British flair. ‘
