Stan Wawrinka upsets Novak Djokovic; wins first career Grand Slam
Thirty year old Swiss Stan Wawrinka, denied World number 1 Novak Djokovic his ninth career Grand Slam by winning the French Open title.
Not only did Wawrinka win his first French Open, he also ended Djokovic's 28-match unbeaten run.
The Serbian International was favorite for the title after beating nine-time champion Rafael Nadal and third seed Andy Murray, but was unable to secure his fourth major title.
Wawrinka who was pleased with his accomplishment, said: "It was an incredible atmosphere on court and I felt emotion like I never have before."
"I would like to thank my coach Magnus Norman. You played in the final without winning but this victory is yours as well as mine."
Djokovic who would have been the eighth man to win all four major titles, was full of praise for the new champion, saying: "There are things that are more important in life than victories and that is character and respect. Stan you are a great champion with big heart."
Djokovic took the first set 6-4, however Wawrinka went on and won the next three to make it 6-4 4-6 3-6 4-6. This was only his second victory against the Serbian International out of 18 attempts.
In the 2008 Olympics Wawrinka teamed with Roger Federer in the men's doubles final and defeated Simon Aspelin and Thomas Johansson of Sweden in four sets to win the Olympic Gold Medal.
