Thiago Silva: Barcelona didn't offer enough money

Paris Saint-Germain defender Thiago Silva says he rejected a summer switch to Barcelona because he wasn't prepared to earn less money with a young family to feed. The centre-back had already cited the handling of Eric Abidal's contract situation as one of several reasons why he rejected a move to Camp Nou despite being linked with the club all summer. Instead, Silva opted to renew a contract that will see him earn €12 million a year at PSG, and has now revealed that he was not prepared to accept a pay cut to move to the Blaugrana. "It was a difficult decision to say no twice to Barcelona," the 28-year-old told Guardian. "It was never a secret that I have admired them since I was a kid and that I always wished I could play for Barcelona. "But life is made of hard decisions that sometimes go against what you dream of. I heard people saying I was just thinking of the money, but they forget we have families to feed. "Why would I accept to earn less money to play for Barcelona? Why are players the ones supposed to sacrifice themselves? "Besides, PSG offered me also an opportunity for a new challenge and the club are trailing the right path." The Brazil international is now in his second season with the Ligue 1 champions after a €42m transfer from AC Milan in 2012.
