Roy Hodgson: I'll Play Rooney As A Striker
England manager Roy Hodgson has insisted he will play Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney up top when England take on Lithuania in their Euro Qualifiers in March.
Rooney has often been deployed as a midfielder during Louis Van Gaal's time at United in favor of Robin Van Persie and Radamel Falcao despite being one of United's record goalscorers with 224 goals.
Roy said "Well, he’s a goalscorer, isn’t he?” he told reporters. “So one always likes to see one’s goalscorers in positions where they can get into the box, and around the box"
"If you’ve got several other goalscorers and you can afford to use one of your goalscorers a bit further back, that’s fine. But he’s our top goalscorer in the qualifiers, he’s just a few goals away now from being England’s leading goalscorer, so I hope he will continue to score goals for us."
Rooney is also close to being the all time top scorer for the national team as well with 46 goals just 3 more strikes to match Sir Bobby Charlton and he will be hoping to set the new record during the Euro 2016
